Expiration is an expiration date management application. Any item with an expiration date can be stored in the Expiration application and tracked at any time.

Below, the tutorial will review the screens of the application and provide users with a thorough understanding of application functionality.

1. Expiration Load Screen

The purpose of the load screen is to display the Expiration application logo while the application loads onto the user’s device.

2. Expiration Login Screen

There are three options on the Login screen:
1. Sign Into Account by Inputting Email & Password then Clicking ‘Login’.
2. Sign Up for Account by Clicking ‘Sign Up’.
3. Retrieve Forgotten Password by Clicking ‘Forgot Password’.

If you have an account, simply place the email and password into the required fields then click login. If you don’t have an account, click ‘Sign Up’ to load the account creation screen. If you forgot your password, click ‘Forgot Password’ to retrieve your password.

If an email or password is entered incorrectly then a notification will let the user know. If you receive this notification, please check your email address and re-insert your password. If this issue persists, simply click ‘Forgot Password’ to resolve the issue. If the email is not associated with an account, then you must create an account via the ‘Sign Up’ option.

There are two options on the Sign Up screen:

1. Login
2. Sign Up

The ‘Login’ button will take the user back to the Login screen. The ‘Sign Up’ button is for creating an account for Expiration. To register for an account, simply input your email address and password. The password will also need to be confirmed prior to clicking ‘Sign Up’. Once the information is placed into the application, click ‘Sign Up’ to register the account and open the Category screen of the application.

There are two options on the Forgot Password screen:
1. Login
2. Forgot Password

The ‘Login’ button will take the user back to the Login screen. The ‘Forgot Password’ button is to reset your password. To reset your password, simply input your email address then click ‘Forgot Password’. An email will be sent to the email address containing a temporary password. When logging into Expiration, use the provided password to log into the application to reset your password.

The Category screen displays user created categories. There are three button options at the top of the page. The options on the Category page from left to right are:

1. Add Category (+)

2. Sort (AZ)

3. Menu (=)

4. Change Category

The ‘Add Category’ button is used to add a Category to the application. A category is required to add an item. The ‘Sort’ button, designated by “AZ”, can be used to organize the list by date, priority, or title. The ‘Menu’ button can be used to access Expiration’s Main Menu. Lastly, a category can be edited by swiping left to right and clicking ‘Edit’. A category can be deleted by swiping right to left and clicking ‘Delete’.

The Category screen will display the title of the category, the number of items within the category, and the color code for the worst case scenario item within the category. The color code allows users to easily know if an item within a category is at risk for expiring or has already expired.

The Add Category screen is for adding categories to the application. To add a category, simply type the name of the category into the field and click ‘Save’. Click ‘Back’ to return to the Category screen if you do not want to add a new category. Overall, this screen allows the user to simply add a new category to the application.

7. Item Screen

The Expiration Item screen displays the items within a category in a list. There are multiple options on this page including:

  1. Add Item (+)
  2. Sort Items (AZ)
  3. Main Menu (=)
  4. Change Item

The Add Item button allows users to add items to the category. The Sort Items button allows users to sort items by alphabetical order, color code, or time. The Main Menu allows users access to Expiration’s main menu. Lastly, an item can be edited by clicking the item. The item can be deleted by clicking the item and selecting the option ‘Delete’ at the bottom of the screen.

The Item screen will display the item title, date of expiration, and color code from left to right, respectively. This allows users to quickly determine the status of a product while still having easy access to the products actual expiration date. The color code option will be described below after the Main Menu screen.

The Expiration Add Item screen is where a user can add items to the application. To add an item, the user must input the following fields:

  1. Item Name
  2. Category
  3. Date

The item name is the name of the product being added to the application. This can be added manually by typing or by selecting ‘Scan Barcode’ at the bottom of the screen. The category option allows the user to designate in-which category to place the item. Lastly, the date option allows users to scroll in the expiration date of the product.

The user can simply add the title of a product by scanning the barcode. If the item is located in a database, the item title will be placed into the application. If the application does not find a title for the barcode, then the title will need to be entered manually. The barcode feature is useful in scanning products including food and other commercial products.

Please note, not all products are included in the national database used for this application.

The Expiration Add Item Category screen allows the user to select the category of a new item. The user simply clicks the ‘Category’ option on the ‘Add Item’ screen which leads to Figure 9. Then, the user may click the category of preference and select ‘Done’. If the user does not intend to make changes, the user can select ‘Back’.

The Expiration Add Item Date screen allows users to scroll in the expiration date of a product. This screen can be opened by selecting ‘Date’ on the ‘Add Item’ screen. To select a date, the user simply scrolls in the month, day, and year of the item’s expiration. After adding the correct date, simply click ‘Save’ to save the item. If there is no reason to change the date, simply click ‘Back’.

The Expiration Scan Barcode screen allows users to scan the barcode of a product to obtain the name of the item. The camera can be alternated between front and rear facing phone cameras by clicking the camera button on the top right of the screen.

To scan an item, simply align the barcode within the dotted square. Once scanned, the application will attempt to pull the title.

If there is no title available, the application will be unable to provide it.

If a title is available, the field will automatically be filled on the ‘Add Item’ screen. A user can stop scanning by clicking ‘Stop scanning’ on the bottom of the screen.

12. Expiration Sort Screen

The Expiration Sort screen offers three types of sorting:

  1. Alphabetical
  2. Color
  3. Time

The alphabetical sorting allows users to organize categories or items in A-to-Z or Z-to-A order. The color sorting allows users to organize categories or items into green to red or red to green (yellow is between green and red). The time sorting allows users to organize categories or items in order of future to past or past to future.

13. Expiration Main Menu Screen

The Main Menu of Expiration provides users with a handful of useful options. The Main Menu includes:

  1. Color Code
  2. Date Style
  3. About
  4. Associations
  5. Feedback
  6. Purchase (Expiration Lite)
  7. Social Media
  8. Tutorial
  9. Visit Website
  10. Log out

The Color Code option allows users to set the relationship between color and time remaining before expiration of a product. The Color Code will be discussed more in-depth in section 14 and 15 below.

The Date Style option allows users to select from six options of styles for dates based on user preference.

The About option allows users to visit Expiration website’s About page to learn more about Expiration.

The Associations option allows users to browse Expiration’s associates.

The Feedback option allows users to leave feedback for Expiration. If you enjoy the application, Expiration would appreciate a great review. If for any reason you dislike the application, please contact us via the Contact page of the website.

The Purchase option allows users on Expiration Lite to purchase the application on the app store. The application can be purchased for $0.99 with no ads and no restrictions. Expiration Lite has a restriction of two categories and ten total items (five items per category).

The Social Media option allows users to visit Expiration’s Facebook or Twitter page.

The Tutorial option allows users to visit this overall tutorial for Expiration. The tutorial covers both Expiration and Expiration Lite.

The Visit Website option allows users to visit Expiration’s website.

Lastly, the Log out option allows users to logout of their account.

14. Expiration Color Code Screen

The Expiration Color Code screen displays the three options for color code: Green, Yellow, and Red. Green suggests that the product is in good standing. Yellow is warning that an item is approaching its expiration date. Red is warning that an item has expired. The amount of time remaining before expiration for each color can be set by clicking each color and inputting it respectively.

The Expiration Color Code Date Input screen allows users to set the amount of time remaining before a color displays. The date input screen is the same for all three colors and the amount of time before each color triggers is entirely up to the user. The user can select a color to display in days, weeks, and/or months. Green is set to 0 days, 0 weeks, and 0 months to set to green anytime it is beyond another restriction. The yellow and red colors can be setup for respective periods such as two weeks for yellow and three days for red.

The user may alternate which color signifies what level as the colors can be interchanged by changing the settings for Green to another color. If you’d like to rearrange the color order from Green to Yellow to Red to another variety, simply alternate the respective dates and set the safest stage to 0 days, 0 weeks, and 0 months. Then, you can set the other two options for their respective periods.

The Expiration Date Styles screen allows users to set how the date is displayed on the application for items. The options are:

1. DD/MM/YYYY

2. MM/DD/YYYY

3. DD-MM-YY

4. MM-DD-YY

5. DD-MM-YYYY

6. MM-DD-YYYY

Above, D stands for day, M stands for month, and Y stands for year. Simply select your preferred date display and click ‘Menu’ to return to the Main Menu.

The Expiration Social Media screen allows users to visit Expiration’s social media pages. To visit Expiration’s Facebook page, simply click ‘Facebook’. To visit Expiration’s Twitter page, simply click ‘Twitter’. Please feel free to join either page to help support Expiration.
